Judy Talley, an urban studies’ major and senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, is serving as an intern to Lynda Callon, Director of the Westside Community Action Network Center (Westside CAN Center) in Kansas City, Missouri. This summer she helped organize and raise money for a back-to-school celebration in which some one thousand children received backpacks with school supplies at a weekend fair and campout at Observation Park in the Westside neighborhood. She has also helped provide basic ID cards to local residents who need them to obtain health care and other local services.
Westside CAN Center serves the entire Westside of KCMO by sponsoring programs that familiarize recent immigrants with the cultural institutions in the city. It also provides a place where people looking for workers can connect with individuals looking for work.
All urban studies majors serve as interns for at least 240 hours in local government, nonprofit organizations, or other appropriate institutions dealing with the city and urban life.
