- Butterfly Day On The Westside
We’re going to Plant a Butterfly Garden Saturday, June 2, 2007 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Tony Aguirre Community Center 2017 West Pennway,
Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, Monarch butterflies used to stop on the Westside, kind of like a big motel – on their journey to Mexico in the fall and returning to Canada in the spring. Then it happened that the trees and plants that they could eat were destroyed and the Monarchs stopped coming to the Westside. Help us bring the Monarch’s back to our neighborhood. On Saturday, June 2nd we’re going to plant Phase 1 of our butterfly garden at the Tony Aguirre Community Center.
Meet Gulliver the Monarch Caterpillar – He is the mascot for Monarch Watch which is an educational outreach program based at the University of Kansas that engages citizen scientists in large-scale research projects.. We hope to register our butterfly garden as an official Monarch Butterfly Waystation. You can learn more about Monarch Butterflies and this program by exploring their website http://monarchwatch.org/index.html
